My name is Alisa Van Meter. I am currently a Masters’ level student at the University of Texas Arlington studying Social Work with a concentration in children and families. I am an intern at Candlelight Ranch, and am in my second semester interning here. I truly have found a lottery-winning internship here at the ranch. Not only do I get to interact with children and have fun, but I get to be outside all the time while doing it! Every time I tell colleagues and friends about my internship, they tell me how jealous they are that I get to go to adult summer camp for school credit. From the magical treehouse to grooming horses, the Ranch is as much of a fantasy come true for me as it is for the kids we serve!
Service is a huge part of my life. I’m learning how to interact with a plethora of children with unique needs and their families. This experience has taught me so much more than I bargained for—and I still have another semester to go! I’m hoping that I can continue volunteering at the Ranch after my internship is complete as well—I’ve definitely fallen in love with the staff as well as the clients. One of my favorite parts of the ranch is being able to fundraise. I love going out at talking about all of the special moments at the ranch and the differences it makes in children’s lives. I especially liked the yearly Dance for Candlelight event and all the preparation for that one special night! I am a huge supporter of Candlelight Ranch, and cannot sing enough praises of the staff, especially my supervisor, Jenn Hartner. I am blessed to have been given this opportunity to learn and serve at such a wonderful place!
