Dr. Ashley Cooper is a licensed psychologist and the daughter of Candlelight Ranch founders, Jeri & Don Barr. She has been involved with the organization since its inception in 1999 and currently serves as a member of the Board of Directors. Dr. Cooper is deeply committed to creating therapeutic and communal spaces where individuals feel safe, supported, and empowered to grow. She strongly believes in the healing power of connection, experiential learning, and access to nurturing environments—values that closely align with Candlelight Ranch’s mission to serve individuals of all abilities.

Dr. Cooper earned her undergraduate degree in psychology from The University of Texas at Austin. In 2004, she and her husband moved to Boulder, Colorado, where she completed her master’s degree in Transpersonal Counseling Psychology at Naropa University. She later pursued her doctoral degree in Counseling Psychology at Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio, Texas. Dr. Cooper completed her doctoral internship at the University of Missouri’s Counseling Center and her postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Texas at San Antonio’s Counseling Services. Her dissertation examined marital naming practices and their effects on women’s self-concept.

Prior to opening her private practice, Dr. Cooper worked at The University of Texas at Austin’s Counseling and Mental Health Center. She has been in private practice in Central Austin for over a decade, working with adults to support their personal growth and overall mental health. In addition to her clinical work, she serves as Vice President of the Capital Area Psychological Association, where she advocates for professional standards and the advancement of psychological services in the community. Outside of her professional and volunteer roles, Dr. Cooper enjoys spending time with her husband and son, caring for her ever-growing backyard chicken flock, and tending to a lively collection of pet fish. She loves nature and is passionate about sustainability and environmentally conscious living.
