Jerome’s Story: Courage, Creativity & Strength
September 11, 2025
When Jerome was just three years old, a gas explosion changed his life forever. The accident left him deaf, blinded in one eye, and covered with burns across his body. Most people would have been defined by such tragedy—but Jerome has never let his circumstances diminish his spirit. He is known for his quick wit, sense of humor, and thoughtfulness toward others.
For years, Jerome worked with pride at a hospital in San Antonio, first in the cafeteria and later as a janitor. This work gave him independence and purpose, until another hardship struck: an aggressive cancer in his leg. Despite months of battling the disease, Jerome lost his leg in August. Even in rehab today, while awaiting a prosthetic, he continues to draw on his creativity and resilience to keep moving forward.
Art has become Jerome’s greatest outlet, a way to transform pain into beauty. His intricate drawings reflect both his imagination and his deep compassion. He hopes that by sharing his art through Candlelight Ranch, he can encourage others who are facing their own trials never to give up.
Jerome is the only biological son of Niki Ladden, who has fostered and adopted 14 children over the years. Together, their large and loving family has been visiting Candlelight Ranch for over a decade. Here, they’ve found a safe place to laugh, heal, and create memories away from the pressures of everyday life. At the Ranch, Jerome and his siblings experience the joy of nature, the comfort of family time, and the strength that comes from being together.
Through all his adversity, Jerome has never stopped wishing to help others. His life is a living reminder of resilience, and his artwork is both a gift and a message: beauty and hope can be found even in the hardest of times.
